Update from Kim!
It was an amazing event. I turned 53 on September 2nd and my number was 53. The paratriathletes were lined up on our numbers, we dropped into the water and the horn blew to start. It was a washing machine, but I was able to keep my pace. I came out of the water in 10 minutes came to transitions and found that both Canadian girls had come out ahead of me. There is a new Les Autre athlete with MS from the Toronto area. She is about 25 years younger, then there was Beth Price a friend from the USA who has MS and is 15 years younger. Lorene Hatelt is the Canadian who got gold in Budapest last year.
I came out of transitions ahead of Lorene and she caught up to me on a big hill. I stayed with her for about 8 km and then she took off. I thought she was really far ahead and so on my second 10 km bike loop I cheered and laugh with the Chinese spectators. I just had fun, but still tried so I could have a respectable finish. When I came in from the bike I found out Lorene was only 1 minute ahead. I got onto the run course and slowly reeled Lorene in. There was a small crowd at the race, but many of Team Canada members, family and friends cheered me on. I knew I had trained hard this year with some amazing coaches at Kronos and I got the strength to run hard. I passed Lorene with 2 laps to go and was able to beat her by several minutes. Jennifer from Canada first, Beth second and I took the bronze.I was soooooo happy! What a race!!!!! I have 2 gold, 2 silver and so was happy to compete in my 5th and final world Championship race and get that bronze to complete the set.
After the awards we made our way back to our hotel and then to another one to meet the Partriathlon team fro dinner. With a full belly, a happy heart I went to sleep with a smile on my face and woke up smiling. I'm just happy and so very grateful for the sponsorships, the support, the love and great coaching, awesome physiotherapist, patience from my kids, Tim and my family and friends. I couldn't have done it without you all.
