It was about 25 degrees outside. They declared the race no wet suits as the water was 22 degrees. This race was an age group qualifier for the world championships in Beijing next year so they were strict on the wetsuit rule - I didn't mind this as the water felt like a really nice temperature to me anyways! (I lot of people were very upset though!).
My swim went pretty good. THe swim was two rectangular laps. I was aggressive in the start and stuck with a few guys for most of the race. I swam a bit crooked a few times on the second lap as people were so spread out since there were so few people in the race - I had trouble seeing the buoys. I felt pretty strong in the water. I was the 10th girl (out of 29) out of the water. I talked to other people after the race and they thought the course may even have been a bit long.
There was a very long run up to T1 over gravel and rocks which hurt the feet a lot. This wasn't much fun. The run was way longer than in Wasa! They captured our T1 and T2 times separately and I was 46th and 20th in T1 and T2 respectively so I don't think I am losing much time here.
THe bike course was very hard. It was 4 times around a large loop which 1/2 was all downhill and 1/2 was all uphill. I am pretty disappointed with my bike time - I'm not really sure what happened. The first lap I almost wiped out twice so this may have threw me off a bit - I almost went over the curb of the road once trying to put my water bottle back in the holder and then later in the lap I dropped my water bottle and ran right over it (lost all of my GU mix on the first lap!). I didn't mind the hills that much but I definitely wasn't going up them as fast as a lot of people. Also, on the downhill part I was on the brakes a bit because the road was in pretty bad shape which made me nervous to go very fast. 21/29 females in the bike - not very happy about this.
T2 went pretty good. No problems other than they made the transition area 100X more confusing than necessary.
The run was four loops around a trail around the lake with a small out and back section. The run was mostly shaded (90%) which was nice since it was such a hot day. THe out and back section was up a very steep hill and down then turn around and go back up it and down. This was tough as it was quite steep. I felt really good for the first two laps and was very happy because I was feeling much better than in Wasa. The third lap I started to feel the pain a bit but it wasn't that bad. I gave it pretty hard on the last lap and finished in 54:24 - only 1:34 off my PB. The thing I am the happiest about on the run is not so much the time, but rather the fact that I felt really good for most of it! 20 /29 on the run - not really that great but I can't be disappointed in this since I am happy about my time.
Overall I am quite happy with my race - a bit disappointed in the bike but very happy with the run.
